A New Montessori Elementary School option through the Sewickley Valley YMCA

What is the new Lower Elementary Montessori classroom?

The Sewickley Montessori School is expanding our Licensed Private Academic School certification to include Lower Elementary, serving students in grades 1–3. This class offers an authentic Montessori experience, supporting children as they feed their deep desire to learn, develop academic skills, independence, and a strong sense of responsibility in the early elementary years.

What characteristics define Montessori Elementary?

The Lower Elementary classroom is designed to support children as they transition from concrete to abstract thinking, fostering independence through self-directed, hands-on learning within a multi-age, prepared environment. The trained Guide leads children through Cosmic Education, long uninterrupted work periods, peer collaboration, and concrete, self-correcting materials. Students work with concrete materials, explore interconnected subjects, and develop critical thinking through meaningful, self-directed work.

Montessori – The Elementary Years

Why is a multi-aged classroom beneficial?

Lower Elementary Montessori classrooms are intentionally designed for mixed ages, fostering individualized learning, natural mentorship, and social development by mirroring real-life community structures rather than rigid, grade-level grouping. This model allows children to learn at their own pace, with younger students inspired by older peers while older students reinforce their knowledge by mentoring, building confidence, empathy, and leadership skills.

What is Cosmic Education?

Montessori Cosmic Education is a defining framework for a holistic, interdisciplinary curriculum for children aged 6–12. This approach presents the universe as an interconnected whole. It uses “Great Stories” to introduce science, history, geography, and art, fostering a sense of wonder, purpose, and responsibility. Cosmic Education aims to help children understand their place in the universe, appreciate their roots, and discover their “cosmic task” or contribution to society.

The curriculum is introduced through five main imaginative stories that spark curiosity and inquiry about the cosmos, life, and human civilization. It emphasizes that all things, from elements to species, have a role and are interrelated, promoting a sense of reverence and ecological awareness.

Cosmic Education is considered the “heart” of the Montessori elementary experience, designed to fulfill the child’s need to understand the world and their role within it.

Is the classroom screen-free?

Yes. All Sewickley Valley YMCA early childhood programs, including Sewickley Montessori, are screen-free. Children learn through movement, materials, discussion, and exploration, supporting concentration, creativity, and deep engagement. We believe that classrooms should be screen-free, and that parents should decide whether and how to incorporate high-quality screen use into family time.

How does the YMCA connection enhance the experience?

As part of the YMCA community, students learn in an environment that values wellness, inclusion, and social responsibility. Children benefit from a culture that supports the whole child and encourages connection beyond the classroom.

Who is a good fit for this classroom?

This classroom is ideal for families seeking an elementary school that provides a calm, purposeful learning environment that is based and built upon research in child development. Montessori education is a strong fit for many children and families, including those who value a self-directed, kinesthetic, and individualized approach to learning. Montessori children are encouraged to be curious, independent, and engaged. It supports students who are continuing with Montessori as well as those new to the approach.

When does enrollment begin?

Open enrollment is now underway. Families are invited to learn more, schedule a tour, and explore whether this program is the right fit for their child.

Will you offer an open house?

Yes. We will host an open house where families can visit the classroom, meet our educators, and learn more about the Lower Elementary. For now, we are scheduling monthly tours for prospective families.
