Backpacks and More: Community Helps the Y Serve Families

Each year, the Sewickley Valley YMCA supports parents as they prepare for the school year by offering a backpack drive. This year, the drive served up to 23 families and, for the first time, started with a generous donation of 50 backpacks from Edgeworth Country Club’s Service Project Club. Each backpack was loaded with school supplies and a water bottle to help families start the 2025–2026 school year strong.

The Service Project Club selects a teen leader each year, and this year’s choice, Angelina, headed up the effort. She coordinated logistics and helped pack bags for the pickup event. “I’ve worked on other service projects and had a lot of fun, so I wanted to continue doing them,” she said. “I feel like I am making a difference.”

In addition to the backpacks, the Sewickley YMCA offered winter jackets provided by Subaru of Moon Township and hygiene kits donated by YMCA volunteer Hunter during the pickup event.
