Finding Balance and Belonging: Halle’s Journey with the YMCA

At just 14, Halle M. has already found a place where she feels a sense of belonging, support, and personal growth—the Sewickley Valley YMCA’s Sea Dragons swim team. As part of our annual campaign, we had the chance to sit down with Halle to hear how the YMCA swim team has become a key part of her life, helping her physically, mentally, and socially.

Discovering a New Passion: How Swimming Helped Halle Find Balance

Halle came into swimming at a time when she was looking for something new. She already played softball and practiced karate, but swimming brought a fresh perspective and energy that she wasn’t expecting. “It’s different from any other sport I’ve done,” Halle explained. “It’s an unexpected and nice surprise to be around so many people who support you.”

What started as a way to stay in shape quickly became something much more meaningful. Swimming helped Halle both physically and mentally, offering her a new source of motivation and support.

Building Mind and Body

Joining the swim team wasn’t just about fitness—it helped Halle overcome mental blocks and build her confidence. “The support from the swimmers and coaching staff is amazing,” she said. The team atmosphere helped her push herself, and she saw impressive results. This season, Halle cut six seconds off her 50 freestyle time and even swam two 100 butterfly races—a stroke she had been afraid to try before.

But it’s not just the competitive side of swimming that matters to Halle. She appreciates what being in the water does for her mentally. “Being in the water is generally just a good time to clear my head,” she shared. “I can go into the water mad or upset, and then come out an hour later and think, it’s not that bad. It’s therapeutic.”

Fostering Friendships and Finding Belonging

One of Halle’s favorite things about being part of the YMCA swim team is the sense of community it provides. As she finishes seventh grade at her Montessori school, she’s excited about the connections she’s made through swimming.

“I’ve met so many people I wouldn’t have met otherwise, and I have friends who are so supportive,” Halle said. “It makes me more inclined to come and swim because I’m meeting kids I’ll be going to high school with.”
