From Recovery to Resilience: Senior Wellness at the YMCA

At the Sewickley Valley YMCA, we believe that living your best life starts with a strong foundation. That’s why we created the Thrive Center, to help seniors build that foundation through diverse wellness and fitness programs tailored to healthy aging.

Reaching for Recovery at the Thrive Center

For Jaymie Mitchell, a lifelong Sewickley resident and YMCA member, the Thrive Center became a turning point in her recovery journey. After suffering a neck injury from a fall and later reinjuring the same area in a car accident, she struggled to heal. “That’s when I really couldn’t recover,” she said. “Even with vestibular therapy, I had these unexpected bouts of dizziness.” The damage to her cervical vertebrae caused concussion-like symptoms, though the issue was nerve-based rather than neurological.

Instead of retreating from movement, Jaymie leaned into it. Having spent years within the Cleveland Clinic system, she embraced a philosophy that combines Western medicine with integrative health. “They believe you should do whatever you can to stay active,” she explained. “And I think at this point, I know what my limitations are, but this is the first time I’ve found a local class so focused on what I need.”

Fitness Programs That Support Healing and Strength

Jaymie credits the Sewickley Valley YMCA Thrive Center and its instructors for fostering an environment that supports both recovery and long-term strength. “These group fitness classes aren’t just about preventing falls, they’re about what to do if you do fall,” she said. “We work on balance, head and neck movement, stretching and strength training. And we’re not just doing the same thing every week. I get to mix it up based on how I’m feeling.”

Healthy Aging and Support Resources for Seniors and Caregivers

Jaymie’s story is not unique—we hear it often. A body in motion stays in motion and that’s exactly what the Y provides. More than just a place to belong, it’s a place to thrive. To learn more about the YMCA programs for seniors and connect with to local senior and caregiver resources, join us on September 25 from 10 am to 1 pm at the Y for the annual Senior Expo in Sewickley. The free event features resources for seniors and their caregivers, and is open the the community.
