In the mid-1940s, YMCA Youth and Government began as a simple program with a Model Legislature and a Youth Governor. Today, it’s a dynamic and immersive learning experience involving hundreds of youth each year in a realistic and complex simulation of Pennsylvania’s state government. The YMCA Model Convention is conducted almost entirely by students.
Participants can serve as legislators, judges, attorneys, lobbyists, and media members. While the primary goal of this program is the promotion of responsible citizenship, the possibilities for discovery are virtually limitless.
Skill Building
Gain proficiency in debate and public speaking while sharpening leadership, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills.
Civic Responsibility
Self-esteem grows as students learn that their ideas matter and they can make a difference in the world.
Community Building
Meet peers from around the state, form life-long friendships and learn to respect the views and opinions of others.
Youth and Government participants gain a deeper understanding of how government works while immersing themselves in the experience of running the state of Pennsylvania for a few days. It’s a unique opportunity to learn about themselves–their abilities, interests, and responsibilities as citizens in a participatory democracy.
